Xiao Ye Hong Oolong is an oolong processed using traditional methods – from natural withering in the sun, gentle shaking, allowing time for oxidation, fixation, rolling, initial drying, to a final light roasting. Unlike other oolongs, it has a higher degree of oxidation, approaching that of red teas, hence the name “Hong Oolong.”

The leaves come from a small-tree, naturally occurring variety of tea plant growing wild in a nearly inaccessible area of Hubei Province. The dry leaves are dark brown, slightly glossy, regularly rolled with visible fine hairs. The aroma is pronounced, floral-fruity, and exceptionally long-lasting. The liquor is clear, bright orange-red in color, offering a delicate, smooth, fresh floral-fruity taste that is simultaneously full-bodied and leaves a gently sweet aftertaste that enhances salivation.

The term “Xiao Ye” in this case does not refer to the size of the leaves but to the location of their harvest. It denotes a semi-wild, hard-to-reach area where original, wild-growing tea varieties are found, Shennongjia National Forest Park.
