In China known as
Xin Gong Yi Bai Cha, literally “white tea processed with a new technique,” named after the new cultivar of the same name developed in Fu Ding in 1968. Its processing differs from regular white teas by adding an intermediate step of gentle leaf rolling (
rou nian). This allows the leaves to break slightly and oxidize more before being dried.
Thanks to its unique appearance and delicate fruity aroma, this tea is relatively successfully marketed in China as the famous Taiwanese oolong Dong Fang Mei Ren, which it vaguely resembles.
