Maocha 2023

SKU: D416
Green (sheng) Pu-erh, or better yet, Maocha from the southern regions of Yunnan. The large leaves (Da Ye) have a very pronounced and exceptionally fresh aroma. The tea was traditionally sun-dried, without accelerated modern oven-drying, and therefore carries not the slightest hint of unpleasant smokiness. The taste is bold and sweet, and unlike typical green Pu-erhs, it has few fruity notes. Instead, you will discover floral tones and a long-lasting, gentle sweet aftertaste. New batch! Same location, year, and producer, but from a different section of the plantation with slightly older tea trees. Its processing makes it suitable for longer-term storage; currently, the taste is pronounced and slightly more bitter. Learn more

Mao Cha 毛茶 [máo chá] – literally “hairy tea,” though in this context “mao” rather means “coarse,” “raw,” or “unfinished.” Mao Cha refers to the Pu-erh semi-finished product created in the initial stages of producing any Pu-erh. For Pu-erh production, it is essential that the semi-finished tea (mao cha) is sun-dried. Various drying methods, of which there are several, determine the final quality and taste of the tea. This step serves a single purpose called shaqing, literally “killing the green.” After this process, the tea loses its grassy taste and bright green color, while gaining a new subtle smoothness.
