Ma Hei 麻黑, in the recent history of Yi Wu tea revival, is the first well-known famous mountain and village. Ma Hei is located in the central area of Yi Wu, hidden deep within a dense forest and surrounded by green mountains. The tea trees grow in the original forest around the village, creating a harmonious picture of forest and tea coexisting, where the forest is full of tea and the tea is embraced by the village.
Shi Men Kan 石门坎 is the oldest tea garden at the highest elevation in the Ma Hei area and is also considered the highest quality. It separates the Luo Shui Dong and Ma Hei regions; the old path runs through Luo Shui Dong and along the Shi Men Kan ridge to the village of Ma Hei. The remnants of the stone path are still clearly visible today.
Shi Men Kan is a small, old tea tree garden within the forest, quite distant from Ma Hei village and situated at a higher altitude. The ancient trees are scattered within the original forest, surrounded by other vegetation, creating a rich natural environment and outstanding tea quality. Due to its remoteness and small area, this area was not reduced during the collectivization period.
Shi Men Kan is a prized tea in Ma Hei; originally, only a few families had tea plots called Shi Men Kan. Today, if you ask in Ma Hei, you will find at least 30 families owning Shi Men Kan, and even in Luo Shui Dong several families possess Shi Men Kan.
Flavor profile: The leaves are thick with wide, flat strips. Spring tea is glossy and dark black, making it very recognizable in the Yi Wu area. The tea has a honey-orchid aroma; the liquor exhibits a creamy fragrance, is full-bodied and heavy, with harmonious bitterness and astringency, silky smooth. The tea provides a strong energizing effect and a pronounced throat sensation, with a long-lasting sweetness that endures multiple infusions, making it an excellent choice.
The trees vary in height, quietly growing in the high forest. Unknown ferns and wildflowers spread beneath the tea trees, creating a harmonious ecosystem with varied canopy heights.
